History of Mid-Sioux

Mid-Sioux Opportunity Inc. is a private non-profit Community Action Agency. We were created under the federal Economic Opportunity Act of 1964. This agency actually got its start in 1966. Our purpose is to work toward the elimination of poverty in America. There are 18 Community Action Agencies in Iowa and nearly 1,000 across the United States. Mid-Sioux serves Lyon, Sioux, Plymouth, Cherokee and Ida counties. Our services work on direct methods to assist low-income families as well as those that are more long term. Services such as Low Income Home Energy Assistance and Food Pantries address immediate needs that families may have while our Family Development and Self-Sufficiency project works to help families move away from public assistance. These are just some examples of the services we provide. Projects are funded by federal, state and county dollars. We receive a great deal of support from businesses, community groups, churches and individuals as well.

Our agency is controlled by a local board of directors representing the public, private and low-income sectors of the communities we serve. This local control allows us to tailor our services to the areas most in need and also provides a way to evaluate how effective we are.
