Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP)

The Child and Adult Care Food Program is a federally funded program that is part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

In the state of Iowa this program is administered by the Department of Education, Bureau of Food and Nutrition.

Northeast Iowa Community Action Corporation is the local sponsoring agency serving the child care homes in Allamakee, Chickasaw, Clayton, Fayette, Howard and Winneshiek, Bremer and Mitchell Counties.

The Benefits of Participation
It will help you provide nutritious meals and snacks for children in your care. As well as provide you with educational training to expand your knowledge of good nutrition and good child care. Reimbursement to the provider is based on the number and type of meals served.

CACFP recognizes you as a professional, running a small business out of your home. You will have the opportunity to talk to other home day care operators to share information, ideas, concerns, and to work out common problems. You will also be promoting nutrition education for all the children in your care and occasionally the children's parents.

Parents like it because they can be sure that their children are receiving consistent, nutritious, high quality food. Children also receive education about nutrition and have the opportunity to participate in food oriented activities.

What You are Required to Do

  • Be a registered Family or Group Day Care home with the Department of Human Services
  • Serve approved meals according to USDA guidelines:
    • Breakfast - a serving of milk, fruits or vegetables and grains or bread
    • Lunch and Dinner - require milk, grains or bread, meat or meat alternative, and 2 servings of fruits or vegetables
    • Snacks - need to include 2 of the 4 components: milk, fruits/vegetables, grains/breads, or meat/meat alternative
    • Keep a daily attendance record/menu planning/meal count form, infant feeding forms (if you have infants), and current enrollments. After the initial paperwork is completed you typically will only do the daily attendance/menu form. For those that have the interne, we have a computer program that is a time saver and is free to the provider. The record keeping required for the CACFP will greatly assist you in preparation for tax time.
